Karen L. Goodis RJE
Hebrew School Principal
Karen Goodis was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York. She graduated from Vassar College with honours, from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion with a Masters of Arts in Hebrew Education, and from the University of Southern California with a Master of Science in Education.
Karen moved to Toronto to work at Leo Baeck Day School in its early years of operation before joining Holy Blossom Temple, where she coordinated programs and developed curriculum for youth and special school programs. She was the director of education at Temple Har Zion in Thornhill before joining Shaar Shalom as principal, and joined us at Beth Sholom as principal of our Hebrew School in 2005. She is a past chairperson of the Supplementary Principals Council and is involved in numerous other Jewish educational activities.
While living with a family in Tzahalal and attending classes at Tichon Chadash in Tel-Aviv, Karen was driven to school on a regular basis by Yitzchak Rabin, who was the head of Tzahal, and says it was one of her experiences in Israel that led her to pursue a career in Jewish education. Karen is married to Michael Goodis and has two adult children.
