WINTER 2008 UPDATE

We opened our doors on Jan 8th to our homeless guests who were grateful to have a hot meal, a warm place to sleep, and a homemade breakfast. Our numbers have been increasing every week and we hit an all time high feeding 120 guests and accommodating 40 guests overnight. Our Out of the Cold program is run jointly with our neighbour synagogue Beth Tzedec and runs until March 25th.
Our program is self- funded and staffed by an amazing group of dedicated volunteers, some of whom prepare a wholesome and tasty lunch bag for all our guests to take with them when they leave. We also provide them with a subway token. We have another eight shifts of volunteers who work up to three hour s on a shift. Our shifts run right through the night until the next morning when we serve a hot breakfast before our guests leave. All our shifts are populated with people who are eager to make a difference. And our Out of the Cold Program does make a difference which is greatly appreciated by our guests.
We feel that we are running one of the best shelters in the city. It is clean, welcoming, comfortable and safe for our guests who either need a good hot meal, or a safe place to relax and socialize, while getting out of the cold for a night.
We provide all this and it allows our Beth Sholom members the opportunity to help others less fortunate. Your assistance is also required as a volunteer for one of our shifts or by making a contribution to the Out of the Cold Program through the synagogue office. We are still looking for volunteers who are night hawks and able to help out on the overnight shifts. We would gladly accept donations of gently worn winter jackets/coats, shoes, boots and warm winter clothing (No children’s or summer clothes please). Please contact the Synagogue office to do so.
