The Chesed Committee at Beth Sholom includes the Kosher Food Bank, our "Adopt-A-Nursing-Home" project, and the "Out of the Cold" program.
The Kosher Food Bank Our Food Bank is one of two Kosher depots in Toronto. We distribute bags of non-perishable Kosher foods to mostly Jewish immigrant families as well as to those in need from the surrounding community. Many of our clients are referred to us by Jewish Family and Child Service (JF&CS). The Food Bank is open every Wednesday between 11:00 am and 11:30 am. If you would like to make a donation, or to help distribute food bags please call the Shul office.
Kosher Food Bank at Beth Sholom
Our Kosher Food Bank continues to be in high demand by those less fortunate. The list of families who need our help continues to grow and they look forward to our weekly food bag which is filled with staples for breakfast, lunch, and dinner including cereal, peanut butter, jam, canned vegetables, fruit, tuna fish, soup and pasta.
Our Food Bank is run every Wednesday morning from 10:30-11:30am by 5 dedicated volunteers. If you can spare an hour and want to perform a mitzvah, we would welcome your assistance. Donations of kosher non-perishable food would be greatly appreciated to supplement our supplies as well as any monetary contributions.
If you are making a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, consider making a centrepiece filled with kosher non- perishable food , which is then donated to our food bank. Please contact the shul office for more information. We are making a difference!
"Out of the Cold" Program Our most ambitious project is the "Out of the Cold" program which starts in January. This program is hosted by Beth Sholom, in partnership with Beth Tzedec Congregation. On Tuesday evenings, throughout the winter months, volunteers arrive to serve between 85 and 100 hot dinners to our guests.
Many of them stay for the evening, and are able to socialize with volunteers, play cards or other games, or watch a movie. Donated clothing is distributed to those in need. Overnight accommodation is provided to approximately 35 people, and breakfast is served to them early Wednesday morning. Everyone who attends the dinner or stays the night is supplied with a bag lunch and a subway token before leaving.
For more information on the "Out of the Cold" Program visit Dixon Hall. To volunteer with the "Out of the Cold" program, contact Rachel at the synagogue office.
The Grace Baker Retirement Home Our synagogue has a group of volunteers who conduct an Oneg Shabbat service at a nearby nursing home and retirement centre on the last Friday morning of every month. The program has been in operation for about five years and is carried out in conjunction with JF&CS.
Although this is in a non-denominational institution, there are many Jewish residents. For some, the Shabbat program is the only opportunity for spiritual nourishment. We also do one-on-one visiting, as there are some residents who have no family. This is a most heart-warming mitzvah.
Foster Homes Beth Sholom, along with several other Synagogues has been working with JF&CS to help find Jewish foster homes. Our combined effort has resulted in a significant increase in inquiries and will hopefully help alleviate the foster care crisis.
