Rabbi Aaron Flanzraich

The current, worldwide explosion of fundamentalism is due, in no small part, to the misconception that knowledge of God can be acquired and truth grasped if we would only follow the strictures of law. Fundamentalists maintain that human excellence is reinforced one character trait over another, then redemption would be ever so much their minds, the fundamentalists have all the answers. And so what I see is a coming cataclysm. Not one of nations, or cultures, but of Weltanshaaung- of worldviews. The events of September 11th, with suicide bombers assaulting the Amercian homeland, remind us that the unfolding war that we are about to face will not be over land, resources, borders, or wealth. It will be over truth-over who will claim it to be theirs. In the mind of the fundamentalist, metaphor is truth. But for those of us who are enquiring and skeptical and believing and hopeful, a metaphor is not a truth but a symbol of just how rich an existence we can have.
